Facing intense pressure locally and
Facing intense pressure locally and abroad, the Bahamas Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources last week issued a statement saying it will not permit net fishing in its waters. The Bahamas government was besieged by e-mails from sportfishermen and conservationists in the U.S. and its own country over the past couple of weeks urging the denial of a commercial fishing permit requested by two Bahamian brothers to use purse seines to catch yellowfin tuna. The statement from the Ministry, posted on TheBahamasWeekly.com last week, reads ``this method of fishing could result in the possible depletion or significant reduction of the fishing stocks in Bahamian waters. Having regard to the importance of sportfishing to the Tourism industry, the Government takes the position that purse seine or net fishing will not be permitted in the Bahamas.'' The statement goes on to say that Bahamas fisheries laws will be amended to prohibit the gear.
